THE
EUROPEAN TRIP
Written
by Johanna Stang Hobrath
[October
2004) The European trip from
August 15 to September 12, 2004 was certainly “A Trip of a Lifetime.”
I and my husband had the opportunity to experience much sight-seeing the
beautiful outdoors that God created, as well as the many cities with its
majestic church steeples, etc. And, certainly, I am grateful that such
a trip was made with my husband, I, and other people.
Why
not travel through the journal pages recorded by this writer; and is now
being expanded via these web pages! Also, many photographs were taken
during the European trip; and, a few of those selected photos give
picturesque views of the places that were visited.
Additional
information: It was in 1951 when I, my
parents, brothers and sisters immigrated into the United States of America.
It was a profound experience to have been able to return to Germany.
Also, I had not seen the hometown of Janova Lehota, Slovakia, for over sixty
years. It was a privilege to have been able to return and see the
house where I was born, as well as the historic church where my parents were
married.

[Tuesday,
August 17, 2004] On August 15,
2004, traveled to Philadelphia with a small plane. The
five-people-group consisted of:
my
husband and I, brother-and sister-in-law, and a grandma from Speyer,
Germany. In Philadelphia, the five person group took a short shuttle
flight. After the shuttle flight, we walked a long distance so that we
could board US Airways Flight #2697. Its destination was Frankfurt,
Germany.
The
long flight to Germany was a relatively smooth flight; however,
the time difference between USA and Germany made all of us tired. At
the Frankfurt airport, we secured a rental car and traveled to Grandma
Lilly’s home. We were graciously accepted at Lilly’s home.
Lilly’s son and wife had prepared lovely tables and delicious food that
was displayed in the garden that surrounded us with a multitude of colorful
flowers and plants. I was grateful - and, I believe, so were the other
four persons - for the opportunity to take a brief nap. [To

In
the evening of August 15, we were served a super pasta casserole in the
apartment of Lilly’s son and his wife.
After
the lovely supper, we then had the opportunity to
walk and
enjoy
the scenery of the beautiful city of Speyer. The picture to your left
displays a tower that is an historic remnant of the wall that
surrounded the city of Speyer, Germany. Many hundreds of years ago,
the surrounded wall kept the inhabitants safe from outside invaders.
The city is a beautiful old city that has been in existence for 2000 years.
The above picture to your right is a picture of Johanna and her husband Adam
in Speyer, Germany. [To view the

While
sight-seeing the many towns and cities that surrounded the area where we
were lodging, we also took time to sit in an area within
the Speyer city that had numerous tables and chairs placed on cobblestones.
Those tables and chairs were for the customers that desired to purchase food
from the restaurant. At one restaurant we enjoyed eating pastry and
drinking coffee, while leisurely enjoying the beautiful sunny weather. [To

[August
20, 2004] Today is a sunny
morning. Yesterday, August 19th, the group of 10 enjoyed a wonderful
boat ride along the Rhine river. One of Lilly's son skillfully
maneuvered his boat while we enjoyed the approximate 5-hour ride and
scenery. At lunchtime, the boat stopped in the center of the Rhine
river and we enjoyed a tremendous lunch that was prepared by Lilly's
daughter-in-law. The noodle salad, the vegetable salad, juice and soda
drinks was very tasty for the hungry group that enjoyed the
"Rhine-cruising Adventure." After lunch, we continued the
boat ride along the Rhine river and, then, the boat was anchored for another
incredible "Coffee-and-Kuchen Fest." It was an absolutely
beautiful time while cruising the Rhine and enjoying the lovely weather,
scenery, and the delicious food. [The
picture to the left displays the busyness of getting ready for the boat
ride. The picture to the right was taken during the boat ride.
The Speyer city can be seen in the background. To view the two
pictures in a larger format, click either picture; and, you may then view

[During
our one-week stay in Germany, and prior to traveling to Switzerland, we
traveled by car (about one-half hour) to the border of France. My
remark was: "I can say that I was in France!"]
Today
[August 20, 2004] we plan to drive to
the stores in Landau, so that a few items may be purchased for the trip to
Switzerland. The trip to Switzerland will begin tomorrow, August 21st.
[Additional comments by JH: I
have discovered that the German towns are actually very close in proximity.
You may leave one town and soon be in another town with a different name;
therefore, not all towns and/or locations are remembered by this traveler.]
